A worked example at U.S. average prices
A 2026 Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD uses 25.2 kWh per 100 miles (EPA record). At the U.S. residential average of 18.16 cents per kWh (August 2026, EIA), 100 miles cost $4.58. A Hyundai Tucson FWD (2.5 L, Front-Wheel Drive) is rated at 28 mpg combined (EPA record), so 100 miles take 3.57 gallons, which at $4.153 is $14.83.
Over 12,000 miles that is $549 for the EV and $1,780 for the gas car, a gap of $1,231 a year in fuel. The two vehicles are not the same price, and the calculator says nothing about the purchase price, insurance, repairs or public fast charging. With the federal credit gone, the purchase side is covered in federal credits and the state incentives table.
Where gas prices stand, by region
EIA reports regular gasoline for five regions called PADDs. The week of Nov 2, 2026, West Coast (PADD 5) was the highest at $5.30 and Gulf Coast (PADD 3) the lowest at $3.64. The calculator maps each state to its PADD, so a driver in Texas starts from the Gulf Coast price and one in California from the West Coast price. A statewide price can differ from its region, which is why you can type your own.
Regular gasoline, dollars per gallon, week of Nov 2, 2026
The price has been falling. EIA's U.S. figure went from $4.46 the week of Sep 28, 2026 to $4.15 on Nov 2, 2026. AAA's national average for regular was $4.04 on Nov 7, 2026, lower again, because AAA reports a later day than EIA's Monday survey.

Method and limits
- EV cost per 100 miles = kWh per 100 miles times cents per kWh, divided by 100. The EPA figure is measured at the wall, so charging losses are inside it. Price: state residential average, August 2026, preliminary (EIA Table 5.6.A). It is not your utility's EV rate; type your own rate if you have one.
- Gas cost per 100 miles = 100 divided by combined mpg, times price per gallon. Regular grade only. Gas vehicles are the 11 gasoline-only 2026 models listed in the dropdown, one trim each, from the EPA vehicles file read Nov 8, 2026. The default pairs each EV with the gas model in the same EPA size class; change it to match your own comparison, or enter your own mpg.
- Home charging only. Public fast charging costs more per kWh and is left out; see the Tesla charging guide for how to price it yourself. For the home side alone, the home charging cost calculator and the state guide go deeper.
- Gas price: EIA weekly retail for the U.S. and five regions, cross-checked against AAA (two sources). Electricity and vehicle data come from EIA and EPA; every source and date is on the data page. Miles per year is an input, not a measured figure. EPA ratings are label values, and cold weather or fast driving move real use.
